Critically Canadian: critical approaches to the study of historical art and visual culture in Canada prior to WWII
The session focuses on recent, critical approaches to the study of historical art and visual culture in Canada prior to WWII. Papers may address any aspect of visual production in Canada, including traditional art media, photography, architecture, spectacle and museum display. Emphasis is placed on archival and other forms of primary research. Topics may address: political and social appropriation of visual culture; representations of complex and/or contradictory identities; critical revisionings of Canadian art historiography; shifts in methodologies; as well as developments in aesthetics and art criticism. The session is being proposed as one of a series of discussions that aim to create a vehicle for the dissemination of historical research on Canadian topics, and as a means of creating an academic network for the sharing of primary research in Canada. (co-facilitated by Karen Stanworth and Anna Hudson)
