Co-sponsored by the History Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the Program in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Northwestern University, the Humanities Department at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Chicago
The Newberry Seminar on Latin American History is open to faculty and graduate students working in any field of Latin American history. We envision the seminar as a forum for scholars to present their current research on any element of the Latin American past. We invite papers that engage questions of social history (broadly conceived) as well as those examining issues of politics, law, intellectual trends, the Atlantic world, the environment, and others. We are committed to maintaining a broad temporal and geographic scope (including both Ibero-America and the Caribbean) and encourage submissions on both the colonial and national periods. We particularly welcome submissions on topics consonant with the Newberry Library's collections in cartography, technology, or indigenous peoples. The seminar is open to graduate students, independent scholars, and faculty at any level of their careers. Preference will be given to papers representing the earlier stages of a research project, article manuscript, or chapter that will generate a discussion maximally beneficial to presenters. Papers will be electronically pre-circulated to participants and introduced at the seminar by the author and a discussion leader. Seminars will take place on three Fridays over the course of the 2008-09 academic year, from 2:00-4:00 PM.To propose a paper, please send a brief proposal explaining the paper's theme and relationship to your current research and a c.v. to each of the seminar coordinators: Chris Boyer (University of Illinois at Chicago, crboyer@uic.edu), Bruce Calder (University of Illinois at Chicago, bcalder@uic.edu), Brodie Fischer (Northwestern University, b-fischer@northwestern.edu), Emilio Kouri (University of Chicago, kouri@uchicago.edu) and Margaret Power (Illinois Institute of Technology, power@iit.edu).
