Explanation of Panel’s Theme: This panel is about interactions of fascist symbols, ideological practices of post-Stalin socialism, and memories of WWII in political and youth culture in Poland, Romania, Yugoslavia and Soviet Ukraine. Using archival documents, youth periodicals, memoirs, personal diaries and interviews as their sources, the papers of this panel will explore the role of the legacy of WWII in cultural politics and identity formation among the youth of the Soviet bloc.
