The new address for the Prints & Photographs Online Catalog (“PPOC”) at the Library of Congress is http://www.loc.gov/pictures. New features include more robust searching, easy-to-use browsing and sharing, and more ways to view images.
PPOC provides access to 1.25 million digital images and to more than 600,000 group- and item-level descriptions covering about 75% of the 14 million photographs, prints, posters, cartoons, and architectural materials in the Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division holdings. (In some collections, only thumbnail images display to those searching outside the Library of Congress because of potential rights considerations.)
Among recently digitized collections are:
* 1,600 eyewitness Civil War drawings by such artists as Alfred Waud and Edwin Forbes
* more than 3,500 large size nineteenth century popular prints, including those published by Currier & Ives, Kurz & Allison, and Prang
* some 34,000 glass negatives from the Washington, D.C., based National Photo Company, documenting news events, 1909-1935
* about 350 editorial cartoons by Herblock, reflecting Herbert Block’s long career.
