Call for papers
OIC Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA, Istanbul) and the Institute for Islamic Research and Intercultural Dialogue, Near East University (Nicosia/Lefkoşa) will jointly organise an international conference on “Islamic Civilisation in the Mediterranean” to be held at Near East University, on 1-4 December 2010.
IRCICA, an international research centre with fifty-seven Member States, is a subsidiary of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. The Centre works in the fields of research, publishing, library and documentation, organises congresses, research awards, competitions of art ad architecture. Its areas of interest include the Islamic civilisation and Muslim cultures, the history of Muslim nations, history of arts and sciences in Islam. Its activities help to promote academic studies and cooperation in these areas, make the Islamic cultures and civilisation better known around the world and promote mutual understanding between peoples and cultures.
The Institute for Islamic Research and Intercultural Dialogue, Near East University, has the objective of studying of Islam and its relationship with other religions in order to promote a closer understanding between them. The Institute is located in Cyprus, which historically has been a cradle of Mediterranean as well as Islamic civilisation.
Conference themes:
I. History of expansion of Islamic civilisation in the Mediterranean:
political administration, inter-state and inter-regional relations
II. The role of Islam in civilisational process: theological and philosophical aspects,
relations with other religions in the Mediterranean
III. Science and technology in Islamic civilisation in the Mediterranean
IV. Architecture and urbanism in Islamic civilisation in the Mediterranean
V. The development of Islamic arts in the Mediterranean and relations with
the arts of other cultures
VI. “Islamic civilisation in the Mediterranean” as an area of research and teaching: promoting the studies and sources
Scholars and researchers wishing to present a paper at the conference are requested to send a brief CV along with an abstract of 200 words in English, Turkish or Arabic by 2 May 2010. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided during the conference.
Deadlines:
i) Submission of paper abstract proposal by 2 May 2010.
ii) Notification of acceptance of abstracts by 15 May 2010.
iii) Submission of full paper by 2 September 2010.
Accommodation:
Accommodation will be available in hotels in Nicosia (Lefkoşa) and Kyrenia (Girne) at special rates to be announced in the second announcement. The University will also provide accommodation at the Guest House (on Campus) and the Dorana Hotel in Kyrenia (Girne) for paper presenters.
Conference proceedings:
The papers of the conference will be distributed in a printed versio and CD-ROM format to all participants.
