The program is inspired by Stickley's dynamic, though unrealized, vision of Craftsman Farms as a utopian community. The lecture by Perdita Buchan, author of Utopia, New Jersey: Travels in the Nearest Eden will explore utopian communities, including Helicon Home Colony, Free Acres, Stelton (The Modern School), and The Self Master Colony, that bloomed in the Garden State and were contemporaneous with Craftsman Farms. The lecture, entitled Utopia, New Jersey: Early 20th Century Intentional Communities in the Garden State, will be followed by a signing of Buchan's book.
Perdita Buchan is a freelance writer whose short fiction and essays have appeared in national magazines including The New Yorker, The Ladies Home Journal, New Jersey Monthly, Harvard Magazine, House Beautiful and The New York Times. Her most recent book, Utopia, New Jersey: Travels In The Nearest Eden, was a New Jersey Council On The
Humanities honor book for 2007.
