CALL FOR PAPERS
THIRD ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM
THEME: GENDER, SEXUALITY, HISTORY AND CULTURE IN AFRICA
VENUE: FACULTY OF ARTS THEATRE, UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS, NIGERIA
DATES: 19 - 20 June 2010
Gender has been defined as the sum total of societal expectations built through the ages around the different sexes. These differ from society to society and may change with time. Sexuality has been defined by the World Health Organization as a ¡§central aspect of being human throughout life and encompasses sex, gender, identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure, intimacy and reproduction.¡¨ Adams Hobel defines culture as the integrated system of learned behaviour patterns which are characteristic of the members of a society which are not the result of biological inheritance. History is the study of the past. The issue of sexuality plays a major role in interactions and power relations between genders. These issues are intersected with culture, ethnicity, race and power. Yet issues of sexuality are not often discussed in the academia in Africa. The Third annual colloquium seeks to explore the intersections between sexuality, gender, history and culture to assess the impacts of these in the society.
