Britain’s involvement with the Indian Ocean will be explored. The East India Company played a major role in initiating and defining this relationship. Themes include: patterns of commerce; subaltern experiences; the dynamics of empire; the scope and limitations of imperial power; the movement and circulation of goods, people and ideas; and the representation of the Indian Ocean and its peoples.
