Panel: “For Christ’s Sake! – Transformations of Christ in Contemporary Literatures”

This panel seeks papers which provide fresh insights into numerous manifestations of Christ figures in contemporary literatures. Despite the fact that traditional Christianity in secularized societies has been largely rendered irrelevant, there has been a reemergence of allusions to and images of Christ in a range of cultural settings. There is growing evidence that the “malaise of Modernity” (Charles Taylor) is countered by the return of a repressed religiosity which does not hark back to premodern times nor does it cling to neoorthodox theologies. Rather, it vacillates between adapting to and transforming existing cultural contexts. As this panel will try to demonstrate, we are currently witnessing a second coming of Christ, albeit in an arguably unorthodox way.
