CALL FOR PAPERS: Twilight series (books and film) 2010 Midwest Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Conference
Friday-Sunday, October 1 - 3, 2010, The Sheraton Bloomington Hotel, Minneapolis, MN
Deadline: April 30, 2010
The Midwest Popular Culture and Midwest American Culture Association is now accepting proposals for our upcoming 2010 Conference on papers and panels relating to the Twilight series.
In the past few years few series have attracted as much attention from the mainstream media as Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. It is now unquestionably a full-blown pop culture phenomenon that has been the source of controversy for its subject matter, quality, and following. Largely criticized for its quality and dismissed because and its main audience of teenage girls, the series still inspires discussion from a number of critical and theoretical perspectives.
We encourage submissions dealing with the following topics, but all abstracts relating to the series and the surrounding pop culture phenomenon are welcome.
* Twilight and feminism
* Twilight fan culture, including online fandom
* Othering or Otherness in Twilight
* Religious or moral themes
* Adaptation
* Issues of celebrity in regards to the cast and author
* Questions of sexuality and chastity
* Twilight as young adult literature
* Twilight and the tradition of vampire literature
* The intersection of Native American mythology
Please include your name, affiliation, and e-mail address along with your 250-word abstract and email it to Katherine Tanski at katherine.tanski@gmail.com.
