This panel sets out to trace the influence of external powers on the progress of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East both from a historical and a political science perspective. Acknowledging that nuclear proliferation has been a consistent regional theme since the late 1950s, the panel aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the most promising measures and actions (sanctions, threat of preventive war, intervention, multilateral negotiations, technology transfer, political influence, etc.) to be taken by outside players in order to prevent the development of proliferation cascades. The panel will feature both historical case studies on the role of great powers vis-à-vis «nuclearization» attempt by regional states (Israel, Iraq, Iran, Libya) as well as contributions to current discussions regarding the Iranian nuclear programme and recent initiation of a number of civilian programmes.
