Away Down South: Sports and Religion in Dixie
The Sports and Religion Forum, an “additional meeting” that convenes at the American Academy of Religion’s Annual Meeting, invites paper proposals for its fourth annual meeting. Papers are encouraged on any sport, team, or individual and its relationship to religion and culture in the American South. Papers might address the following questions (though not limited to these):
• What distinguishes the relationship between sport and religion in the American South?
• How has the relationship of sport and religion changed historically in the American South?
• How has the fervent religiosity of the American South affected the role of sport in that culture?
• How have race and gender played out at the intersection of sport and religion in the American South?
Proposals for papers should be sent to Eric Bain-Selbo, Department Head, Philosophy and Religion, Western Kentucky University, 1906 College Heights Blvd., Bowling Green, KY 42101. Inquiries and electronic submissions may be made to eric.bain-selbo@wku.edu. Proposals should not exceed 750 words in length. Proposals are due by June 1, 2010.
Publication Opportunity
Participants will have the option to submit their manuscripts for possible publication in The International Journal of Religion and Sport, a new journal published by Mercer University Press.
