“Confronting the Carceral State: Policing and Punishment in Modern U.S.” will bring together a group of scholars from across the country to present papers and engage in a broader dialogue about this crucial, if understudied, aspect of American history. The conference will consist of a discussion of pre-circulated papers with individual commentators. Potential topics will include 19th and 20th century anti-delinquency efforts; analysis of regional and state differences in policing and punishment, youth and adult confinement; discussion of how gender, race, sexuality and class shaped the evolution of the American carceral state; the interrelated histories of lynching and capital punishment; protest, rebellion, and social activism behind bars; and the importance of racial and eugenicist ideology to North American understandings of crime and punishment.
