Looking for 1 panelist for MESA panel on slavery in and the slave trade to the Middle East and North Africa. (Conference to take place in San Diego, California in November 2010).
We seek to examine histories of slavery and abolition in the region by focusing on various connections between notions of race, religious righteousness, and power. Themes include but are not limited to justifications (or condemnation) of enslavement, “discourses” surrounding anti-slavery movements, as well as scientific (or pseudo-scientific) debates that framed the practice of human bondage and its abolition.
We welcome studies on any period, as long as the focus is clearly the Middle East and North Africa.
