Native America at the Crossroads: Sovereignty and Cultural Renaissance Since 1960
A conference for Authors of Chapters on Native America
The Newberry Library, Ruggles Hall
5 March 2010, 9 a.m. – Noon
This collection of eleven essays speaks to one of the most provocative issues of our time—cultural revitalization and nationalism in a transnational context. During recent decades Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Native America have engaged in intense struggles to overcome a past dominated by imperial powers. Divided into three major sections, this collection will assess multiple aspects of nationalism. In the first section the authors treat the theme of cultural revitalization, including literature, drama and music; in the second, they examine popular outlets for nationalism, such as sport and concerns over the environment; in the third, they explore the political and economic manifestations of devolution and sovereignty. Although few scholars have examined the comparative dimensions of cultural revitalization and nationalism, there is no question that from the 1960s forward, the peoples of Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Native America shared to an extraordinary degree a common set of experiences.
The collection includes twenty contributors—five chapter authors for Native America and fifteen chapter section authors for Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The contributors for Scotland, Ireland and Wales met at a similar conference in Aberdeen, Scotland on 29-30 October 2009.
