Theory & Philosophy Summer School
The annual Theory and Philosophy Summer School is an interdisciplinary residential course offering courses, symposia, debates, student presentations, and blue horizon sessions aimed at postgraduate students in the arts, humanities and social sciences. It brings international scholars and students together with Irish scholars and students to create a unique learning, teaching and dialogical environment.
2010 Theme: Evaluation, Judgement and Critique
Research in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences depends on practices of evaluation, judgement and critique. We are expected to evaluate texts, reports, or artifacts; to critique positions, institutions, or arguments; and to judge practices, beliefs, or forms of life. Evaluation, Judgement and Critique are meant to establish principles and provide alternative courses of action, weigh the truth or falsity of beliefs or ideas, help to act justly, and to justify actions. But how do we judge, evaluate or critique? On what bases, on whose authority, and with what justification? Faced with the different contexts of relativism, multiculturalism, cosmopolitanism, and postmodernism - can we judge objectively? Can we evaluate without prejudice? Can we critique freely? Do practices of judging, evaluating and critiquing encourage appropriate responses to local and global crises, or can they deepen the problems we face?
