On Lying in Politics: A Conference around the work of Martin Jay
The Centre for the History of European Discourses and the Department of Political Science and International Studies (University of Queensland) are pleased to announce that they are jointly hosting a conference on ‘Lying and Politics’, February 26th, 2010. Renowned intellectual historian Professor Martin Jay (Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor, History, UC Berkeley) is the keynote speaker for this event. Professor Jay has recently published The Virtues of Mendacity: On Lying in Politics (University of Virginia Press, 2010). In this new book, he argues that the political hypocrisy that we often decry may be the best alternative to the violence justified by those who claim to know the truth. Professor Jay will discuss his surprising and controversial claim that lying is a democratic virtue.
