Canadians in the United States: American Dreamers in their Social and Economic Context
An interdisciplinary conference, 12-13 May 2010 / Montreal

The conference organizers, in collaboration with the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS), wish to invite scholars, writers and students, from all disciplines, to a
two-day conference on the American experience of Canadians. This conference will be held at the Université de Montreal, on the 12 and 13 of May 2010, as part of the 78th annual meeting of the Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS).
Relations with the United States have been one of the foremost themes of Canadian economics, history, and culture, if only because twentieth-century Canada is better understood in its continental context, better than in any other perspective. But also because the Canadian intelligentsia has long explained its own existence in terms of Canadian-American differences, in terms of a ponderous American economic and cultural influence.
This influence has fostered migration between the two countries, which allows scholars to put intellectual pronouncements in perspective. What was, migrants seem to ask, the American reality for migrating Canadians?
Proposals for single papers and full panels should arrive by 10 February 2010, either by email or regular mail. A
proposal should include the title of the presentation or panel, the mailing address, email, and affiliation of the presenter or panelists, and a 250-word summary of each paper (and of the proposed panel if applicable). Questions may be submitted to the conference's secretariat, at the Urbanization, Culture, and Society Center of the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS-UCS), in Montreal. Paper and panel proposals are welcome in
either French or English.

Les organisateurs, en collaboration avec l'Association d'études canadiennes (AEC), invitent chercheurs, auteurs et étudiants de toutes les disciplines à un colloque sur
le thème de l'expérience étatsunienne des Canadiens. Ce colloque aura lieu à l’Université de Montréal les 12 et 13 mai 2010, dans le cadre du 78e congrès annuel de l’Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS).
Les relations avec les États-Unis est un thème incontournable de la compréhension de l'histoire, de
la culture et de l'économie du Canada. Parce que le Canada au XXe siècle se comprend souvent mieux dans son rapport avec les États-Unis que dans n’importe quel autre contexte. Et parce que l'intelligentsia canadienne a longtemps expliqué son existence en fonction de ses différences avec les États-Unis, et de l'imposante présence économique et culturelle de son voisin.
Cette présence a occasionné des flux migratoires entre les deux pays. Ainsi se pose, derrière le discours, la question de la réalité de ces migrants et voyageurs qui, répondant à l'appel du Rêve américain, ont choisi les États-Unis.
Les propositions de communications ou de panels sont attendues au plus tard le 10 février 2010, par courriel ou par la poste. Ces propositions devront comprendre le titre de la communication ou du panel proposé, un court résumé (250 mots maximum), ainsi que l'affiliation et les coordonnées actuelles du proposant (et des communicants le cas échéant). Les questions peuvent être acheminées au secrétariat du colloque, au centre Urbanisation, culture et société de l'Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS-UCS), à Montréal.
