Moorland-Spingarn Research Center: Preservation as Practice A Howard University College of Arts & Sciences Symposium

The College of Arts & Sciences at Howard University announces a two-day symposium to articulate the significance of the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center (MSRC) and Howard’s intellectual legacy to laying a foundation for the university’s future. This symposium will: (1) Highlight Howard’s uniqueness as the central repository for Africana intellectual production in the American and global academy; (2) Affirm Howard’s commitment to considering its past and mission as it undertakes academic renewal; and (3) Convene a national body of scholars, archivists, and intellectuals to assess the history and meaning of the MSRC, past and future.
Day one of the symposium, themed “Howard University, The Moorland- Spingarn Collection, and the Preservation of Africana Memory: Intellectual Genealogies and Missions,” will explore questions related to the collection’s history and purpose, its holdings and acquisitions, its relation to other archives held by the university (the Channing Pollock Collection, the African-American Resource Center, and the South African Archival and Research Project), its role in supporting approaches to academic disciplines that are unique to Howard, and its position on research centers in the digital age.
Day two of the symposium, themed “Reinscribing Meaning: Howard University, Intellectual Memory, and ‘Visions of a Liberated Future’,” considers MSRC in the context of intellectual academic renewal at Howard, identifying the university’s uniqueness (past, present, and future) in (re)defining the Humanities and the Fine Arts, the Social Sciences, the Natural Sciences, and Graduate and Professional education.
Proceedings and resolutions from the symposium will be published (online and in hard copy), thus articulating firmly Howard’s meaning, mission, and enduring vision to policymakers, scholars, and the general public.
