At the Second Annual Seminar of the BGHS, 30 young scholars will present their projects from the point of view of dynamics and change. This will involve the following questions:
What factors lead to change or trigger a certain dynamics? What do structures contribute to change? What is the role of institutions and "organizational fields" (Paul J. DiMaggio) in change? What prevents change and causes barriers?
In discussing these issues, we will not only look at structures, mechanisms or institutions. We will also ask: What is the importance of chance and contingency for questions of dynamics and change?
We will be addressed on these issues by a number of distinguished scholars whom we have managed to attract as keynote speakers. The opening talk at 5 pm on 8 February 2010 will be given by Jan Assmann, an egyptologist from the University of Heidelberg.
