Following on the heels of the first three in the series, [Buffy Meets the Academy(Summer 2009), The Universe of Oz (Spring 2010), and Riddle Me This, Batman! (Summer 2010)], this text seeks to bring to popular culture studies the same sort of scholarly weight that attends the work of Aristotle or Faulkner or Derrida and, at the same time, to present that scholarship in a readable style that allows both laypeople and scholars to read and enjoy. Scores of films lend themselves to Critical Theory interpretation, from Sweeney Todd’s “Eat the Rich,” to power along Eve’s Bayou, to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil’s “It’s the riche that counts.” This text seeks to critically engage Marxist Critical Theory from a variety of scholarly angles, emphasizing the interplay of visual text and critical interpretation.
