Castleton, Vermont • October 13-16, 2010
The Pioneer America Society will hold its 42nd annual conference at Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont, on October 13-16, 2009. Sleeping accommodations will be available at the Comfort Inn Trolley Square in Rutland, Vermont.
This event will be hosted by the Department of History, Geography, Economics, & Politics at Castleton State College.
The 2010 Conference theme is: Memory and Landscape on New England’s Northern Frontier. The meeting will begin on Wednesday with registration and a welcoming reception. Papers will be presented on Friday, and both Thursday and Saturday will be devoted to day-long field trips.The first tour will head west and will include visits to historic Castleton Village, the Revolutionary War’s Hubbardton Battlefield, and the town of West Rutland with its old Marble Works. The second field trip will explore the region to the east of Castleton including stops at Brown Bridge, a covered bridge in Shrewbury, constructed by Vermont’s most famous bridge builder, Cuttingsville, a 19th century railroad village, and Laurel Glen Cemetery, the home of the Bowman Family Mausoleum.
The conference committee will be soliciting proposals for papers, special sessions, and panel discussions relating to the conference theme after the first of the year. However, papers on all material culture topics of interest to the Society will be welcome. The abstract deadline will be announced in the Spring of 2010.
