Latino Studies, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, invite you to a conference on Latinas and Latinos in the U.S. South, with a general focus on inter-ethnic/inter-racial relations. The conference will take place at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa on February 19, 2010. The purpose of this conference, and the resulting special issue of Latino Studies, is to explore and highlight the growing social, political and cultural significance of Latinos in the region referred to as the Nuevo New South.
Invited presenters will examine historical and contemporary issues related to the experiences of the growing population of Latinos and Latinas in the Nuevo New South. They will explore the changing nature of racial and ethnic relations in the region from a broad variety of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives. The conference will also include a panel discussion led by community organizers active in the region’s Latino communities.
