CALL FOR PAPERS: The Métis in Canada
As editors of a proposed book of peer reviewed essays on the Métis in Canada, we are seeking submissions of new and unpublished papers. Collectively, this major collection of essays on the Métis in Canada will be a valuable contribution to scholarship on Métis history, Métis identity, Métis rights, and the politics of the Métis people. While papers on a variety of Métis-related topics will be considered, topics of particular interest are:
1. Historical
1. The fur trade and economic development
2. The role of the Métis and Halfbreeds in the Red River Settlement
3. Leading through rebellion: Louis Riel and his legacy
2. Sociology
1. Conceptualizations of Métis “identity”
2. The Census and the Aboriginal People’s Survey (APS)
3. Recent behavioural data regarding Métis people in western Canada
3. Legal and Constitutional
1. The Manitoba Act
2. The 1982 Canada Act
3. Jurisprudence, land claims, and the practice of legal rights
4. Métis Politics
1. Representative organizations: MNC, MMF, MNO, and other provincial orgs.
2. Libertarianism and the political culture of Métis people
3. Wooing the Métis vote: Provincial and federal party politics
All papers submitted should be accompanied by an abstract of 150 to 200 words. Papers must meet the standards of university-level scholarship. Papers can be between 6,000 and 12,000 words in length and should be submitted double-spaced (except quotes). Submitted papers that are of interest to the editors and pass their initial review for quality will be subject to a double-blind peer review.
The three editors are Christopher Adams, Ian Peach, and Gregg Dahl. Collectively, these three editors have 40 years of experience in working on studies involving national and regional issues, including a large number of scholarly journal articles, syndicated studies, conference presentations, and four scholarly books.
The papers will be published in a collection of essays to be published by a major Canadian scholarly publisher. Papers should be submitted by May 30, 2010 for publication in 2011. Please direct submissions to Dr. Christopher Adams at: adamsc@cc.umanitoba.ca
