MLA Special Session on Civic Engagement as Pedagogy in the Multicultural Literature Classroom
|
Special Session, Modern Language Association Convention, Los Angeles, January 2011 (new date for MLA)
Topic: Service learning as Pedagogy in the Multicultural Literature Classroom
Service learning--a sustained, service experience outside of the traditional literature classroom--has the ability to enhance students' interpretive abilities as it develops their civic awareness. How do you use service learning (reflective journaling, reader response analysis, class reporting) in a traditional literature class? Although I have focused the topic on multicultural literature, other classes (women's studies, philosophical/anthropological approaches to literature, creative nonfiction, etc.) would also be possible.
Deadline for abstract: March 1, 2010 to Professor Roberta Rosenberg, rrosenb@cnu.edu
