Literature helps teachers engage students by putting a human face on economic and environmental disaster, our national history, women's history, and family struggles: this is the purpose of a unique new interactive website and blog community.
This website, updated daily, is unfolding a new epic story that combines three elements:
*presenting strong female lead characters,
*helping readers picture economic and environmental disaster (the past is prelude) during the Depression, and
*giving readers, teachers, and students the unique opportunity to interact via blog with a writer while a work is being created.
This website, fully functional now at http://dustbowlpoetry.wordpress.com, will soon be linked as the work of the first guest artist of the website honoring the late Horton Foote, the screenplay writer of To Kill a Mockingbird and the writer of Tender Mercies.
The website author is a new Great Plains writer. Her story is about a farm family struggling to survive the Dust Bowl. Each day a new "mini-episode" will be added, and the writer will respond daily to blog comments on the story as it progresses.
