Call for Papers for a Panel: “1989 and Beyond: Understanding Cultural Struggle, Discourse and Representations in Eastern Europe, Asia and Post-Tienanmen China”
Fiske Matters: A Conference on John Fiske’s Continuing Legacy for Cultural Studies
Madison, WI, June 11-12, 2010
http://www.fiskematters.com
This panel will examine the applicability of the theoretical insights of John Fiske toward a consideration of a variety of cultural struggles in the post-Communist nations of Eastern Europe and Asia as well as in post-Mao China. Panelists are encouraged to conceptualize the particular modes of oppositionality and expressions of cultural identity embraced by various cultural formations based upon class, occupation, ethnicity, nationalities, regional cultures, and so on. Panelists may consider these complex cultural formations in light of Fiske’s distinctive theoretical core, which was informed by “Foucauldian theory of power and bodies in argument with structural Marxist ones of ideology, consciousness and class; a Gramscian account of struggles (inflected by the work of Vološinov, Hall and Williams) between the power-bloc and the people; and a Bakhtinian sense of the vitality of the people and the constriction of the power bloc.”
Please send a 500-word abstract for a paper contributing to this panel to Pam Wilson at PSW@reinhardt.edu by January 12, 2010. Please include a brief bio (25-50 words).
If you are interested in contributing to an edited anthology but are unable to attend the conference to present your paper, please indicate this in your submission.
