CALL FOR PAPERS
Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad, and Public History in New York
Afro-Americans in New York Life and History welcomes the submission of original research examining the role of Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad, or the dilemmas surrounding these topics in the practice of public history in New York State for an upcoming special issue of the journal. We seek to engage a variety of issues addressed by scholars, public historians, educators and other established practitioners in the field.
Afro-Americans in New York Life and History welcomes essays addressing any aspect of the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad in New York State including but not limited to:
1. Controversies surrounding the symbol and significance of Harriet Tubman
2. Dilemmas of accurately teaching Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad
3. Challenges in preserving the heritage of the Underground Railroad
4. Public and private institutions in New York State that preserve or promote the history of the Underground Railroad and/or Harriet Tubman
5. Addressing the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman in historical, cultural, political, economic and geographical context
6. Comparing pedagogical approaches to Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad in New York State to other regions and locales
7. Interrogating Harriet Tubman and her meaning in the context of the culture wars and “post-racial” American society
8. Engaging policies and strategies to preserve and promote the legacy of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad in New York
Submissions should be original research at the length of 7,000 words or less, not counting notes, tables, or charts. The citation style used by the AANYLH generally follows the conventions recommended by The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition. The text should be double-spaced. Citations should be numbered consecutively and should appear as endnotes. Please include your full addresses, including e-mail, in all correspondence.
The editors prefer that manuscripts be submitted in an email as a Microsoft Word attachment or in Rich Text Format (RTF) to aanylh@gmail.com with “AANYLH UGRR MS Submission” in the subject line. No manuscript will be considered for publication if it is currently under consideration by another journal or if it has been published elsewhere.
Submitted essays are submitted to a double-blind peer-review process. The text of your essay should not include your name or institutional affiliation.
