Orville Vernon Burton, the Burroughs distinguished professor of southern history and culture at Coastal Carolina University, will present a free public lecture at Drake University on "The Age of Lincoln" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in the Reading Room of Cowles Library, 2725 University Ave., Des Moines, Iowa. The author or editor of eight books, Burton focuses his research on aspects of the American South, including race relations, family, community, politics and religion. His lecture is in conjunction with the national traveling exhibit "Abraham Lincoln: A Man for His Time, A Man for All Times," at Drake's Cowles Library from Jan. 11 - Feb. 8, 2010. The exhibit, accompanied by letters and photographs from Civil War soldiers, is part of Cowles Library's "Citizens Arise!" series. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History organized the exhibit, which is made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
