What: The HistoryMakers NEH Summer Institute on African American Political History
Who: 25 of the nations best high school teachers

The HistoryMakers 2010 NEH Summer Institute will examine the entire breadth of African American political history from the period of the early American republic through the election of President Barack Obama through four major themes: 1) African American Political Development Pre and Post Civil War; 2) early 20th Century Black Political Strategies, Civil Rights Unionism, and WWII and Cold War Racial Politics; 3) the civil Rights Movement; and 4) 1970s Black Politics and the New Generation of Black Politicians. Features of the Institute include:
A Four-Week Immersion Program for 25 of the nations top teachers
Oral History Training including interviews with local Chicago politicians and civic leaders
Access to The HistoryMakers Digital Archive of over 400 interviews
Participants Serving as Master Teachers for their communities
A Final Research Project to create African American political history lesson plans
Participants will also receive training in oral history techniques to implement into their respective classroom curriculum. The Institute will comprise of lectures, discussions, and field trips to Chicago-based African American museums and libraries. Full time high school teachers working in public, private, parochial, and charter schools are eligible to apply. Two spots will be reserved for advanced graduate students. Successful applicants will receive a stipend of $3,300 minus the cost of housing. All participants will stay in the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place hotel for the duration of the Institute.
