The Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program awards Scholarships to college sophomores and juniors with a dedicated interest in American history for summer study in New York City.
In 2010 ten undergraduates will be awarded scholarships for a five-week program(June 27-July 31) in New York City. Thirty students will receive scholarships for a one-week program (June 12-19). The aim is to identify and support the top undergraduate majors in American history across the country.
Five-Week History Scholars Program
Ten Gilder Lehrman History Scholars will be awarded a fellowship
worth $10,000 that includes tuition, books, field trips, a travel allowance
of $600 for transportation to and from the programin New York City,
room and board, and a $2,200 stipend. They will participate in a
five-week residential history program in which they:
• Conduct primary-source research on rare, unpublished,
historical manuscripts in the Gilder Lehrman Collection
led by program instructors and focusing on the Founding Era,
slavery and abolition, or Civil War holdings.
• Meet and study in small seminars with historians such as
David Blight, Eric Foner, Carol Berkin, or others.
• Receive behind-the-scenes tours of rare archives at the
New-York Historical Society, the New York Public Library,
and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
• Produce original research projects under the supervision of the
program director.
One-Week History Scholars Program
Thirty Gilder Lehrman One-Week Scholars will participate in a
weeklong intensive history program where they:
• Meet with leading historians about major issues in American
history and possible careers in the history profession.
• Participate in discussions with scholars on careers for
history majors.
• Visit historical sites and museums in New York City and
meet with writers, editors, museum curators, and other
history professionals.
