Call for Essays: Academic Studies of Television Cult Favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000
For proposal to McFarland Publishers, a book of scholarly essays interpreting MST3K from compelling academic perspectives. I am particularly interested in readings of the show as an act of cultural criticism, but other proposals will be happily considered. Some possibilities include:
•The show’s textual structure and use of framing narratives
•The show as a dramatization of “reader response” criticism or its treatment of films as “writerly” texts
•Recurring themes in the show
•The show’s treatment of specific cultural or social issues and/or public figures
•Iconic episodes and their significance
Please submit one-page essay proposal and preliminary bibliography as MS Word document to Shelley Rees at srees@usao.edu. Proposals due March 19, 2010.
