Mystic Seaport's 31st Annual “Music of the Sea” Symposium.
Mystic Seaport Museum, University of Connecticut, Avery Point, and United States Coast Guard Academy are seeking paper proposals addressing aspects of music or verse of the sea or inland waters from the Age of Sail through today. The 2010 Sea Music Festival will focus on the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, whaling, and whaling ports-of-call, but papers on other aspects of sea music are also strongly encouraged. The sessions will be held at UConn-Avery Point (June 11) and Mystic Seaport (June 12). Topics have included whaling ballads, shipboard work songs, songs of maritime or other occupational trades, seafaring cultures, ethnic influences, cultural exchanges, ballad and broadside traditions, technology, regional interests, and popular culture.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE February 28, 2010. Graduate students encouraged.
