This interdisciplinary conference at the University of Sheffield aims to bring together the different scholarly ways of approaching the Victorian period and to examine their points of crossover and divergence. From ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ to ‘The White Man’s Burden’, from Honoré Daumier’s lithographs to the Chartist poetry of the Northern Star, the politics of the nineteenth century both shaped and were shaped by poetry and images. This conference will provide an opportunity to foster scholarship on the nature of the relationship between aesthetic and political practice. Reference to the networks of influence between Britain and Europe will be especially encouraged. We hope to provide a forum for exploring historical moments, individual texts, and works of art as well as broader literary, artistic and political movements in their enduring effects on British culture.
Cornelia Pearsall (Smith College, Massachusetts), Malcolm Chase (University of Leeds) and Lindsay Smith (University of Sussex) are confirmed as keynote speakers.
A roundtable discussion to close the conference will be led by Mike Sanders (University of Manchester), Bertrand Taithe (University of Manchester) and Martina Lauster
(University of Exeter).
The event will take place at the heart of the University of Sheffield campus on 26th and 27th March, 2010.
Registration is now open via the website. The deadline for CFP is 15 December 2009.
