CONCEPT NOTE
The main aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussing the ‘personnel structure’ of an institute, their inherent diversity and its consequences with a particular focus on the teacher training institutes. The discussion would center around the fact that diversity can be in any form, be it caste, race, sex, etc.
It is commonly experienced that a number of institutions face a number of problems due to there inherent diversity particularly with regard to their structural development. People at the higher positions in the institute often misuse their commanding authority thereby making their juniors feel low and suppressed. But why does that happen? Because they strictly want to adhere to the principle of ‘unity of command’ thereby maintaining the rigid hierarchal boundaries of social structure in which they are situated.
The discrimination based on caste, color, sex, etc as practiced against some ‘category of groups’ due to the lower position they hold in their working institution needs to be eliminated to get an egalitarian society. Hence the importance of ‘Diversity Management in the Institutes’ is increasingly felt. Diversity management is nothing but a process of creating and maintaining a positive environment where the differences of all personnel are recognized, understood, valued and appreciated so that everyone achieves his/her full potential. In other words, managing diversity is all about understanding each other hand moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual. In this context, I propose to conduct a workshop specifically for the teacher training Institute to sensitize them on this important issue.
Following are the themes of the One day Workshop “International Understanding on Diversity in Higher Educational Institutions Special focus to Teacher Training Programme February 20th 2010.
• Psychological dimension of personnel’s (at the higher level of the institution) personality make-up. This will help in understanding as to why they behave in such a way, the factors that account for their ‘superiority complex’.
• To address the issue of freedom and equal respect for all.
• To understand the diverse perspective on pluralist relationship amongst teachers belonging to different backgrounds.
