Caribbean Music as Resistance
European colonial powers work hard to remove all traces of African culture in the Americas. Slave owners outlawed the practice of African religions, the use of drums, vilified African dance forms and forbid the slaves from using their native languages. Despite these efforts, the slaves and their descendants in the Caribbean were able to retain many of their cultural practices. This session invites papers that explore examples of African resistance to European hegemony in the Caribbean through their musical expressions and inventions.
