“Ideology in Motion: On the Relationship of Sports and Politics.” Graduate Student Conference at The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C. December 4-5, 2009.
Before Vancouver welcomes the world to the 2010 Winter Olympics, it will first host this international and interdisciplinary conference that aims to explore the relationship between sport, culture and ideology from a variety of contexts and perspectives, namely: the social psychology and political economy of sports; gender, class and race in sports; sports and the Olympic myth; and sports and politics in the Weimar Republic and during National Socialism. This conference features the keynote address by Dr. Andrei Markovits of the University of Michigan, titled “Global Players, Local Cultures: Sports and Cosmopolitanism in Europe and North America,” while Dr. Matthew Pollard of the University of Victoria will present “Leni Riefenstahl's Motion / Pictures” as the plenary address.
We welcome anyone interested to join, but ask that you register in advance on the conference website.
