Seeking panelists for presentation at Native American Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA) annual meeting in May 2010 in Tucson (http://naisa.org/). Presentation proposal will focus on Student Learning Through Community Engagement. Student learning can take place in many venues, and academic service learning and internships provide students with an alternative method of instruction and learning. How have students learned more about Native peoples and Native communities through academic service learning or internships? Do you or your students have successful stories of community engagement where learning was at the core or learning happened organically? We are seeking presentations that range from reflections within an academic service learning setting to internship opportunities within a tribal setting to volunteering in a Native community. Focus must be on student learning and so we would like to empower students (graduate or undergraduate) to present if possible. Abstracts must be between 250-300 words. Because the due date for the NAISA is December 1, we are requesting that these abstracts be submitted by Friday, November 20. Successful abstracts will be notified by Tuesday, November 24. Please send abstracts to April Lindala, Center for Native American Studies, Northern Michigan University, at alindala@nmu.edu.
