CALL FOR PAPERS
The School of English, at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań
is happy to announce that on 11th April 2010
6th LITERATURE IN ENGLISH SYMPOSIUM (LIES 6)
will be held
The topic of the conference is:
”Empty Treasure chests dumped from departed ships”: Re-mapping (post)colonialism in art and literature in English
Our guest speaker will be
David Dabydeen,
the author of "A Harlot's Progress"
In David Dabydeen’s poem “The Old Map”, the hope of a new world is green but green symbolizes also the gangrene of the sailors. Such rather unsavory paradoxes can be found in the works of contemporary post-postcolonial writers, who engage in a dialogue with literary history while actively re-shaping contemporary culture. Far from seeking easy reconciliations, the contemporary (post)postcolonial writers rewrite the colonial experiences in relation to art and literary works. The major inspiration for the 2010 Literature in English Symposium is the art of David Dabydeen, a Guianese British writer, poet and literary scholar, whose efforts have always been directed toward re-creating the lives forever lost; those of nameless slaves and coolies of the West Indies. His inspiration, in turn were, among others, the paintings of William Hogarth and Joseph Mallord William Turner. The 2010 LIES addresses the question of postcolonialism in a contemporary post-postcolonial reality. We would welcome a broad spectrum of papers concerned with the colonial and post colonial imagination. Although for Peter Ackroyd’s Plato and the inhabitants of a future London in AD 3700, literature comes from “litter” or “waste”, following the romantics, we believe in the inborn superiority of literature as a mode of knowledge and judgment, and our treasure chests are not empty, they are filled with literary works.
Abstracts will be received by 15st December 2009
Our guest speaker will be
David Dabydeen
the author of A Harlot's Progress
