Sophia University Institute of Comparative Culture Lecture Series 2009
Japan, South Korea, and China:
In Search of a Shared Historical Awareness
Dr Lionel Babicz
The University of Sydney
Department of Japanese Studies
November 19, 2009
From 5 pm to 6:30 pm
Room 301, Building 10
The talk will introduce past and current attempts to forge a shared historical awareness between Japan, South Korea and China - official committees examining the historical disagreements between the two countries, citizen groups attempting to create common pedagogical material, and local or individual initiatives. Contrary to the common view of being a historical battlefield, the countries of East Asia have also been confronting courageously the largest issues concerning their shared past. Nevertheless, a comparison with the European experience, especially that of the French-German joint history textbook, prompts caution regarding these attempts’ real chance for success.
Lecture will be in English
