VISAWUS is an interdisciplinary asssocation that invites papers addressing the general topic Oceania and the Victorian Imagination. The conference will focus on the complex relationships between the Victorians and the East. Papers are encouraged from the broadest range of fields, e.g., literature, art history, gender studies, science, history, and politics. Possible topics include but by no means are limited to Investors in the East, Australia in Literature, The East and the Military, Maps of Oceania and Victorian Geography, The East and the Crystal Palace, Colonial Rule and the South Seas, Popular British Novels and the Art of the South Seas, Indigenous Women and British Men, Photography and the Ethnography of Oceania, Philosopy East and West.
