The Eckington Civic Association now has a web site. At this time, only the historical ("past") section is live. Other sections ("present" and "future") are under development.
The core of Eckington consists almost entirely of single-family rowhouses which were built between the turn of the century and the 1920s. Even though many have been neglected or were gutted during the real estate frenzy, many MORE are relatively (or entirely) intact. Residents are divided on the Historic District issue.
Too many landmarks and historic features have already been lost. With the rapid build up of NoMa to the south, and apartment/condo blocs in Eckington itself planned or already underway, relating this neighborhood's history - and raising awareness of its historic value - is critical.
We plan to expand the historic section of www.eckingtondc.org over time as we gather more material. In the near future, we will begin collecting oral histories from the surprisingly high number of elderfolk throughout the community.
Everyone is encouraged to contribute text/images which can be published (without violating copyright). Original narratives may also be submitted.
