We invite papers for a proposed panel for the 2010 ATHE conference addressing the situation of the touring actress on the American stage. This panel will examine the historical position of the traveling female performer, and we hope to include papers representing several periods of American theatre history. We especially invite papers that address the conference theme: theatre, media, and survival. How did evolving media impact the careers of these women? Did/has the growth of new media forms hinder the success of the touring actress? Were/are any performers able to exploit new media to improve their stage careers? Papers can address touring solo stars or women touring in larger companies, traditional actresses or more unconventional performers.
