On Saturday, October 17th, 2009 Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, MA will host a symposium called “The Sword of the Lord and of Gideon”: John Brown & The Coming of the Civil War.
David S. Reynolds, author of John Brown Abolitionist: The Man Who Killed Slavery, Sparked the Civil War, and Seeded Civil Rights, will be the keynote speaker.
The symposium begins at 9 a.m. on the 7th Floor of Scibelli Hall, with registration at 8.30 a.m. This event is open to the public and free of charge.

John Brown moved to Springfield in 1847 to establish a wool distribution company. Although the business failed, the four years Brown spent in the city deepened his involvement in the abolitionist movement.
