Dissent, opposition and minority in contemporary literature and film from South Asia and/or the South Asian Diaspora: Call for papers Panel 16 at 21. European Conference on Modern South Asian Studies, University of Bonn, Germany 26.07.2010 - 29.07
We invite papers that focus on resistance, rebellion and the experience of exclusion in modern literature and film in South Asia and the countries of the South Asian Diaspora.
Ever since the development of modern literature and film there has been a tension between works that were seen as or declared themselves to represent all-encompassing, national values and identities and those that put forward alternative, subaltern identities, often subverting the claims in 'nationalist' art. This lends itself well, but is not restricted to, the study of cultural products based on the experiences of minorities. Minorities can be meant as referred to sexual orientation, financial status, ethnicity, etcetera. We encourage papers that refer to 'parallel cultures', but also to stylistically alternative models that tend to subvert the established patterns of literature and cinema, like parody or satire. The papers are expected to present analyses of literature and film that focus on the interplay between ideology and cultural aesthetics. Methodological analysis should be an important element of the presentation. Comparative approaches are welcome as long as they refer to a substantial extent to literature and film from the South Asian subcontinent and the diaspora. The papers should be original as publication is an option.
