The ninth biennial International MTSU Holocaust Studies Conference will be presented October 22-24, 2009 at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. The theme of this year’s conference is “The Holocaust and World War II,” Murfreesboro is 30 miles SE of Nashville with easy access to the Nashville airport.
Our Keynote Speaker, Gerhard L. Weinberg, author of A World At Arms: A Global History of World War II and several other books, has won almost every award that is possible for an historian to win including the coveted $100,000 Pritzger prize that he will receive on the last day of the Conference. He will speak on Thursday evening at the conference on “Roosevelt, Truman and the Holocaust” and the day before the conference, he will present a pre-conference lecture at the St. Clair Senior Center on “Pope Pius XII in World War II”.
Our second featured speaker, Raffael Scheck, will speak on Friday on “Racial Hatred: Hitler’s Black African Victims.” Our final featured speaker is Whitwel Middle School Principal Linda Hooper, winner of this year’s MTSU Distinguished Alumni Award. Hooper, who designed the famous paper clip project, will discuss the project, screen the film “Paper Clips” based on it, and answer questions from the audience. As always at our conference, there will be a Survivors and Liberators session in which we bring together Holocaust Survivors and American Liberators of the camps, most of them from Tennessee.
In addition, this year’s conference will include academic sessions that feature presenters from the US, Canada, Great Britain (Oxford), Israel (Tel Aviv), Ukraine (Kiev), Poland (Krakow), Italy (Rome), Germany and Slovenia. There also will be a session that includes a performance of anti-Nazi poems and a short play by Bertolt Brecht and a Second Generation panel.
