Veiled Constellations: The Veil, Critical Theory, Politics, and Contemporary Society
This is an international conference to be held at York University in Toronto, Canada from June 3-5, 2010. This conference aims to bring researchers, artists, activists, students, and the general public together to discuss and problematize not only the political and qualitative nature of the veil, but also the prevailing discourses on the topic. This is to be achieved by, first, employing the insights of critical theory to move beyond the traditional liberal, conservative, and Islamic debate regarding the veil, and second, attending (in a deeply responsible way) to the connection between thought and policy, and of the need therefore to develop new understandings of the Islamic veil, and the veil as such. Submission formats may include academic papers from any relevant discipline and/or creative submissions such as poetry, video performances, storytelling, visual arts and other alternative formats. The proposal deadline (150 word maximum) for this conference is October 1, 2009. Please send proposal submissions to submissions@veiledconstellations.com. Interested applicants can view the Call for Papers and conference information at www.veiledconstellations.com.
