City of Peekskill, National Maritime Historical Society
and Peekskill Yacht Club Welcome Century-Old Dutch Fleet
Tuesday, 15 September, Peekskill Bay, Peekskill, NY
4:00 – 7:00 PM, 5:00 PM – Welcoming Ceremony
Join the City of Peekskill, National Maritime Historical Society and Peekskill Yacht Club on Tuesday, 15 September as we welcome nineteen Dutch traditional leeboard vessels and their crews at Peekskill Bay for an enjoyable and educational evening of festivities and international fellowship.
On September 15th, a fleet of nineteen Dutch traditional leeboard vessels of all sorts—low slung skutsjes, fishing boats (Botters, Lemmeraken and Hoogaarsen) and barges (Tjalken en Ponen) —the direct descendants of the vessels that sailed the Dutch coast, around Manhattan and up the North River to Peekskill and Albany in the 17th century—will sail into Peekskill Bay. Most are original watercraft, more than 100 years old.
The vessels will cross the Atlantic Ocean aboard a Dutch freighter, arriving 1 September, and will remain for three weeks in the New York City area, taking part in a sailing regatta around the Statue of Liberty, and daily sails on the city’s waterways. On 13 September the entire fleet will take part in a “Parade of Sail” in New York Harbor that will salute the Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife Maxima, who will observe the parade from on board the Dutch frigate Hr.Ms.Tromp.
Upon the fleet's arrival in Peekskill, they will be fêted by the City of Peekskill, the Peekskill Yacht Club, and the National Maritime Historical Society. The event takes place from 4:00 -7 p.m., with a welcoming ceremony at 5 p.m. The community is invited to take advantage of the opportunity to board these vessels and learn their history.
