Dear Historians and Graduates Students:
On July 20th, 2009, the Government of Canada launched nation-wide consultations to solicit opinions on the issue of copyright reform. These consultations will pave the way to changes to the existing Copyright Act—changes that may have significant impact on university research and learning in Canada. It is expected that the new legislation will be tabled in the fall.
Individuals, groups and organizations are invited to participate in an online consultation, which will take place from July 20 to September 13, 2009. It is absolutely critical to make the views of the academic community heard as part of this consultation. The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences’ Copyright Committee is presently working on a position paper to be presented to the Executive Committee at its August 28th retreat. The Federation paper will be submitted as part of the online consultation.
It is also critical to ensure that the voice of academic associations and institutions but also from individual researchers is heard as part of this consultation. Laura Murray, Chair of the Federation’s Copyright Committee has prepared a call to action to the university research community and assist you in preparing your own contribution.

Le 20 juillet, le gouvernement du Canada a lancé des consultations dans tout le pays pour recueillir les points de vue des Canadiens au sujet du dossier de la réforme du droit d’auteur. Ces consultations ouvrent la voie à des changements à la loi actuelle sur le droit d’auteur qui pourraient avoir un impact important sur les activités de recherche et de formation universitaires au Canada.
Les individus, groupes et associations sont invités à participer à une consultation en ligne entre le 20 juillet et le 13 septembre 2009. Il est impératif de faire valoir le point de vue de la collectivité universitaire dans le cadre de cette consultation. La Comité sur le droit d’auteur de la Fédération travaille actuellement à la rédaction d’un exposé de position qui sera présenté au Comité exécutif lors de sa retraite qui se tiendra le 28 août. Le document approuvé sera ensuite soumis dans le cadre de la consultation en ligne.
Il est également essentiel de faire en sorte que les associations et institutions académiques ainsi que les chercheurs soient entendus dans le cadre de cette consultation. La présidente du Comité sur le droit d’auteur de la Fédération des Sciences humaines, Laura Murray, a préparé un appel à l’action à l’intention de la collectivité universitaire et pour vous aider à élaborer votre propre soumission.
