Call for Papers – “Charting New Courses in the History of Slavery and Emancipation” – March 4-6, 2001: The Center for the Study of the Gulf South at The University of Southern Mississippi and the Department of History at The University of South Alabama announce a conference on emerging trends in the historiography of slavery in the Americas and Caribbean. We invite proposals (300-500 words) for individual papers and panels that evaluate the existing literature and explore subjects that previous scholars have neglected. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following: internal and international slave trades; comparative or transnational approaches to slavery; the influence of gender on slavery; emancipation and manumission; and industrial or urban slavery. Scheduled speakers include Ira Berlin (University of Maryland), Mark M. Smith (University of South Carolina) and Gad Heuman (University of Warwick and editor of Slavery and Abolition). All papers will be considered for publication in the conference’s refereed proceedings.
The conference will be held at The University of Southern Mississippi’s beach front Campus in Long Beach, Mississippi.
